MORTGAGE FORECLOSURE WORKSHOPS
The housing market decline has affected so many of our East County homeowners, who are struggling to pay increasing mortgage payment. Senator Tom Torlakson, Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier and I have sponsored a series of workshops for East County homeowners who are threatened with losing their homes. These workshops provide legal strategies to help families stay in their homes, as well as local resources of places to get help. TIGHTENING UP THE COUNTY’S INSPECTION OF RENTAL UNITS
I am proud of our instituting a strict rental inspection program to protect our area’s renters from becoming victim to neglectful landlords. It took a lot of hard work to put this new program into effect, and now many cities throughout California are using our rental inspection program as a model. REDUCTION IN HOMEOWNERS’ PROPERTY TAXES
Because of the decline in the housing market, many families who purchased homes in the high market years are continuing to pay high property taxes each year. I have been working with County Assessor Gus Kramer and East County families to get the word out to homeowners that they can apply for a temporary property tax reduction under Proposition 8.
